If you’ve been researching where to elope near Asheville, NC, chances are you’ve come across Linville Gorge Wilderness. This is quickly becoming one of the most requested locations so I decided to create a guide for planning the most perfect Linville Gorge Elopement!

Linville Gorge has been dubbed “The Grand Canyon of the East” and boy, are there some amazing views here! The Linville Gorge Wilderness is located about 1.5 hours from Asheville, NC, about an hour from Boone, NC, and less than 3 hours from Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Whether you’re eloping just the two of you or having a small wedding with your favorites, there’s a little something for everyone. Epic mountain views, cliffs, rock outcroppings, raging waterfalls, forests, and more! With no permits required and year-round access, Linville Gorge is the perfect place to elope in North Carolina!
In this guide, you’re going to see real life Linville Gorge elopements and I’ll share some tips from a local expert (Hi! That’s me!). Let’s get into it!

Unlike many Blue Ridge Parkway locations, the Linville Gorge Wilderness can be accessed year-round since it’s not typically affected by any seasonal road closures. This makes it great in any season! Linville is also lower in elevation making it a little warmer than other higher-elevation locations.
Let’s break it down by season so you know what to expect!
Since Linville Gorge is lower in elevation (1,000 feet at the river, a little over 4,000 feet at its highest points), spring can be fairly mild here. Toward the end April into the beginning of May, you’ll see Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel speckling these landscapes in the most lovely shades of pink and purple! Spring is a magical time of year!
Here are the pros and cons of eloping in the spring:

Cons:

Is there anything better than summer in the Blue Ridge Mountains? None that I can think of! Everything is so green, the water is cool, and we have waterfalls to explore, friends!

Pros:
Cons:

If you’ve never experienced fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’re seriously missing out! There’s really nothing like it! And eloping in the fall?! Holy smokes!!! You can’t beat having a multi-colored backdrop to say, “I do”!

Unlike locations in the higher elevations such as Black Balsam, you can experience fall color into early November in Linville Gorge. This makes it a great place if you want avoid the busy mid-October crowds and still have fall foliage in your backdrop.
Pros:
Cons:

Most people would never consider eloping outdoors in the wintertime, but don’t count it out! The leaves may be gone, but with lower temps, you’ve got lower crowds! If you’re wanting the most privacy, wintertime can be the best time to elope in the mountains! There’s an old saying that goes something like “there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing”. If you’re prepared for it, it can be a magical time of year!

Since you have year-round access here and milder temps, a winter elopement is totally doable!
Pros:
Cons:

I’ve experienced just about every weather scenario as a North Carolina elopement photographer who spends of time in the mountains. While Linville Gorge can be milder than other locations, mountain weather can still be wild in North Carolina. The weather here changes quickly and often so it’s best to be prepared for anything!
That said, Linville Gorge can typically be easier to predict and temperatures tend to be more consistent than other locations.
In Pisgah National Forest where Linville Gorge is located, no special use/wedding permits are required if you’re including less than 75 guests. However, I strongly urge folks to not take more than 20 guests to Linville Gorge, and in most cases, less than 15. Safety is important and many locations in Linville Gorge are harder to access which makes it risky to include too many guests. There are rare plant species and sometimes space at these locations can be limited. Also, there are many sharp drop-offs which can make it dangerous for children and pets. Be aware!
Linville Gorge can be great, however, because there is a location within the gorge called Wiseman’s View which is ADA accessible. The only caveat, however, is the road to get there. It’s usually washed out with big ruts so a higher clearance, 4WD vehicle is recommended! That road is not for the faint of heart but it’s awesome if you’re like me and you love a rough dirt road!

Don’t sleep on this spot – Linville Gorge is a great location for your North Carolina elopement! The accessibility and views alone make it a top spot in Western North Carolina.
I hope these tips help!
